To mark the summer solstice - an astronomical moment of repose and contemplation, and the high point of the short English summer - waterside contemporary presents a series of five events. The first, on 21 June, features performances by Donna Huddleston and Lucy Pawlak, and the gallery’s summer party.

Dramatic gesture and rituals of performance are recurring themes in the work of Donna Huddleston. Influenced by film, art and design of the European avant-gardes, as well as by theatre, her practice mines modes of female self-display, behaviour and transformation. Huddleston's piece will form an episode in a larger choreographed performance with seven female participants, set to three original compositions written for the triangle.

Lucy Pawlak's practice aims to design structures for the reflexive navigation of how and why we conform to systems, and what the possibilities of breaking with those patterns might offer. Featuring an 'interactive' romantic encounter with an artist-in-residence on a far-flung island, Pawlak’s performance will deploy multi-modal five-sense stimulation, shot entirely from ‘your’ point of view.

Donna Huddleston studied fine art and theatre design. Her solo exhibitions include Witch Dance, Sadler's Wells, London, and Golden Hands, Concrete Café, Hayward Gallery. She has also participated in group exhibitions such as In the Belly of the Whale, Montehermoso, Spain, and the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2010.

Lucy Pawlak studied graphic design at the University of the West of England, painting at the Royal College of Art, London, and cinematography at the Polish National Film, Television and Theatre School, Lodz. She was a LUX Associate Artists in 2011. Recently, Pawlak has exhibited, performed and screened her work at Art Metropole, Toronto, Kettle's Yard, Cambridge, and the NFT, London, and previously at the Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle, Palais Kabelwerk, Vienna, and Karma International, Zurich.
